LISD to offer students food over summer break

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – Laredo ISD is reminding families that hunger doesn’t take a vacation now that summer break has begun.

The district plans to provide over 50 locations where children aged 18 and under can receive breakfast, lunch or snacks without needing an ID or registration.

The locations include LISD schools, pools, city rec centers, churches and libraries.

District officials, including LISD’s Director of the Child Nutrition Program, Robert Cuellar Jr., state that such programs not only keep children happy while they are away but also provide long-term benefits.

Cuellar stated, “It is excellent because we offer nutritious foods that students typically like during the school year. We’re going to have the ham and cheese croissant in the morning, some cereals, and then for lunch, the famous beef tacos. We’re also going to have chicken tostadas, fresh fruits and vegetables and milk, so it is an excellent program. It’s something we don’t want parents to struggle with financially, and it’s sometimes difficult to provide meals. That’s where we come in: Healthy, nutritious meals so students can learn, and be ready when they start school.“

The summer meal program begins on Thursday, May 29, and runs until July 18.
