ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. (WCAX) – You can help Vermonters in need while at the checkout line at the grocery store.
Starting May 12, when customers go to the register at Hannaford supermarkets, they are invited to donate $5 or $10 to the Vermont Foodbank.
Hannaford kicked off the campaign in Essex Junction on Tuesday by giving the nonprofit $10,000.
The food bank says the cash is badly needed, citing a lack of donations, food prices going up by 30% and federal cuts.
“We are seeing challenges at the federal level there. Talking about cuts up to twenty percent of the SNAP program. That would mean losing resources, losing dollars to purchase food. The next stop is going to be the food shelf or meal site. We need to be prepared,” said John Sayles, the CEO of the Vermont Foodbank.
It isn’t just here in Vermont. Hannaford is doing this across New England and New York.
