Three children were nearly struck by a pickup truck that came crashing into their living room in Pontiac.

The truck slammed through the front door and window of an apartment on Firelite Lane near Cherry Hill Drive around 12:20 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to reports of the crash and a woman fleeing the scene while carrying her dog.

The children — two 10-year-old boys and a 13-year-old girl — had gone to their apartment just minutes before the crash to pick up personal belongings and return to a babysitter’s home across the street when the truck hit the building, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. They escaped by breaking out a nearby window and climbing to safety.

They suffered minor scrapes from flying debris but were treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization, authorities said.

The driver, identified as a 36-year-old Pontiac woman, was found nearby after a crowd pointed her out to responding deputies. She was being held by a security guard when officers arrived and was transported to a hospital after complaining of possible injuries and denied being the driver.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated but was released pending the results of toxicology tests, the sheriff’s office said.

The crash remains under investigation.
