Alphabet investors eagerly awaiting the company’s developer conference Google IO, which kicks off later today. They’ll be watching for signs the company can maintain its dominance in search amid increasing competition, especially from AI. The stock underperforming the broader tech sector so far this year, but even with concerns around search, a big focus of the conference will be on developments around Google’s AI offerings. Joining us from Mountain View, California is Mountain View, California, is Yahoo Finance tech editor Dan Howley. Dan, great to get a sense from you on the ground. What you’ve been hearing from this conference, what sticks out to you?

Yeah, Maddie, really the the big thing we’re going to be looking for is any kind of AI improvements uh to Google search. Uh you know, they’ve talked about how they’re putting more AI elements into search. You obviously see uh AI overviews. That’s those uh kind of AI summaries at the top of your search results. Doesn’t always show up. Uh but you know, it’s it’s often a feature that you may see. Uh and look, this is an important time for Google. We heard uh Apple’s uh senior vice president of services Eddie Cue during Google’s antitrust hearing say that the company had seen a decline for the first time in searches in the Safari browser. And the base uh search engine for Safari is Google. Now, there’s there’s kind of a uh is it isn’t it a thing? Uh basically there there’s speculation that maybe Apple may be downplaying how Google is performing because they have a $20 billion deal where Google pays them uh to make Google the base uh search engine for Safari and you know, if if the antitrust hearing doesn’t turn out their way, they may lose that $20 billion. But that’s neither here nor there. The the main thing is that there’s this uh perception that Google may be falling behind the AI competitors like perplexity, like Open AI, and chat GPT. So you’ll see a lot of elements of that. And then obviously, you know, they compete heavily with Microsoft Azure and and Amazon AWS when it comes to Google Cloud platform. So we’re going to be looking to see any kind of elements there when it comes to AI. They have uh AI and workspaces, but what else will they be adding? And then, you know, last year they they unveiled this this kind of really wild project, Project Astra, which was basically a way of interacting uh with your your phone and your AI, uh being able to see the world around you through your phone’s camera and then provide information about that. So hopefully we hear more about that and where that’s going. They do have uh a AR VR agreement with Samsung where they’re building a headset. Uh and so you would think that they they would kind of expand from there. So they do have competition in that space already. Uh meta offers its Metaray vans uh AI glasses. Um and Apple is reportedly working on its own glasses that may come sometime in 2027 or if not later. Uh but clearly a lot of of kind of, you know, competition in that space because these companies want to know what’s next after the smartphone. Uh and it could be these glasses, maybe not, but they want to make sure they’re not left behind.
