On Monday, May 12, Summit High School hosted its annual signing day for its lengthy list of senior student athletes who will be going on to pursue their sports at the collegiate level next academic year.

This year’s crop of athletes included rugby players, sailors, mountain bikers, rodeo stars and distance runners.

The ceremony began with Summit High School assistant athletic director and former student athlete Haleigh Lecklitner highlighting the importance of sports in an academic as well as professional setting.

“I am an retired student athlete myself and I understand there are certain truths you learn through competition and participation in sports at all different levels,” Lecklitner said. “Through athletics, we learn how to win with class, lose with dignity and compete for our maximum potential, not just in sports, but in all aspects of life.”

Lecklitner then highlighted just how rare it is for high school student athletes to advance to the next level of their sport.

“Only about 6% of high school athletes go on to play sports at the next level,” Lecklitner said. “These students deserve to be celebrated, and so do all of you for making their journey possible and supporting them through every win, loss, lesson and goal achieved.”

Student athletes who were featured at the signing day event included:

  • Isaac York, cycling, Fort Lewis College
  • Aila Harmala, cycling, Colorado School of Mines
  • Harbor Scheuermann, sailing, University of Miami
  • Olivia Lyman, rugby, Dartmouth College
  • Delilah Staberg, rugby, Quinnipiac University
  • Josh Shriver, cross-country and track and field, Air Force Academy
  • Ella Hagen, cross-country and track and field, University of Colorado
  • Ashley Smith, rodeo, Kansas State University

The student athletes will officially graduate from the Class of 2025 of Summit High School on Saturday, May 24.
