ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (WKRC/KRQE/CBS Newspath) – A tense situation unfolded when officers responded to a call involving two children, ages 9 and 7, playing with a handgun at a home they had visited before. The incident was captured by a drone operated by the officers.
After five minutes of negotiation, Bernalillo County sheriff deputies fired a non-lethal projectile at a wall to safely intervene and secure the firearm from the children. One sheriff emphasized the importance of the drone program in preventing a potentially deadly confrontation.
“I will tell you if it was not for our drone program, we would have probably went in there a little bit more blind and been into a deadly force confrontation pretty quick and as you can imagine, it would not have gone well with us killing or shooting a 7 and 9 year old,” the sheriff said.
Following the incident, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office reported that its behavioral health unit took over the case. No charges had been filed against the children, but the investigation was focusing on the adults involved.
“But we’re dealing with a 7 and a 9 year old, so now we’re looking at the adult side. How they had the firearm, are they going to be charged with, you’re probably looking at the the Benny Hargrove law. We’re looking to all of that,” the sheriff said.
In the three months since the incident, BCSO has connected the family with case management, trauma therapy, medical services and behavioral support. Danielle, a representative involved in the case, mentioned that the source of the children’s behavior was being addressed, though details remain vague.
