House Republicans consider imposing new work requirements for food stamp program

(CNN) – House Republicans are considering making changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, including new work requirements.

SNAP provides food benefits to low-income families. A source says the House Agricultural Committee is considering a change to the program’s work requirements for able-bodied adults that would move the upper age limit from 54 to 64 years.

Another possible change under consideration would require parents of school-aged children to work or volunteer 20 hours a week or 80 hours a month.

While SNAP benefits are currently fully funded by the federal government, the House committee is reportedly looking to impose new requirements for states to supplement some of the costs. States would pay an amount based on their overpayment error rate.

The potential changes to the program come as House Republicans are trying to find $230 billion in savings.

Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows SNAP served an average of 42.1 million participants per month, or about 12.6% of all Americans, in the fiscal year of 2023. Federal spending for the program totaled $112.8 billion.
