French and German Finance Chiefs Eye New Phase for EU Policy

Germany and France’s finances chiefs vowed to drive a new phase in European policy making as they met for the first time in Paris after the confirmation of Friedrich Merz as German chancellor this week.

The leadership of the European Union’s two largest economies has been undermined in recent months after political upheaval in both countries. Eric Lombard is also relatively new to his job, taking over France’s finance ministry in December after the previous government collapsed in a parliamentary battle over the 2025 budget.
