Sports roundup: Sweet Home outlasts Philomath in softball marathon

In a key softball battle in Oregon West Conference play Wednesday, Sweet Home outlasted Philomath, 11-10, in a game that went 10 innings.

The Huskies (14-7 overall, 6-5 Oregon West) scored a run in the top of the 10th and then got out of a bases-loaded jam with one out in the bottom half to secure the victory.

Philomath (11-9, 5-6) won the season series over Sweet Home but dropped into fourth place in the conference standings with four games remaining. The top two teams in the league, Cascade and Stayton, appear to be headed toward earning automatic berths into the 4A playoffs. Sweet Home and Philomath are fighting for the third-place spot to qualify for a play-in game. Two fourth-place teams from the 4A conferences will also qualify for a play-in game based on rankings.

Newport evens series with Philomath in conference showdown

With an Oregon West Conference baseball title on the line this week, Newport evened its series with Philomath with a 7-2 victory Wednesday at Terry Stephenson Field. The Warriors (17-3 overall, 10-1 league) will now travel to Newport Thursday for a 5 p.m. game that could go a long way toward deciding the league conference…

Wednesday’s game was close all the way. PHS took its first lead in the bottom of the first on a one-run single by Zoee Howard. Later in the fourth while trailing 6-4, the Warriors tied the game on a Hailey Smith single that got Kaylie Kohler home on a throw followed by a steal of home by courtesy runner Sierra Skaggs.

The late-inning drama got going in the sixth inning when Philomath took an 8-7 lead on a two-run home run by Kohler. But in the top of the seventh, Sweet Home scored two runs to regain the lead on a two-out single by Aaliyah Brown.

The Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Libby Kramer started the inning by reaching on an error followed by a bunt single from Rylee Martin. Howard then put a ball in play toward first base that drove in Kramer and moved Martin over to third. Sweet Home escaped the situation by throwing out a runner at home on an attempted steal and following with a fly out to center field.

In extras, Philomath got a runner over to third in the bottom of the eighth with two outs but she was stranded. In the ninth, Sweet Home went up 10-9 only to see the Warriors tie it up again in the bottom half on a one-run single by Haley King.

Beginning in the 10th, rules call for a runner to be placed on a second to begin the inning. Sweet Home got its runner home with one out but Philomath limited the damage with fly outs to the shortstop and center field to strand two base runners and end the inning.

In the bottom half, Philomath had the bases loaded with one out but the game ended with a pick-off at third and a line out to the pitcher.

Kohler had a big game at the plate by going 4 for 6 with two doubles and the home run. Martin was 3 for 6, Hailey Smith and Kramer both went 2 for 5 and Bennett was 2 for 6. In all, Philomath had 16 hits.

Smith went the distance at pitcher and faced 52 batters while throwing 177 pitches. She allowed seven earned runs and three walks with 10 strikeouts.

Philomath is scheduled to play at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Stayton.
