DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service has approved Governor Kim Reynolds’ summer food program.
The program, Healthy Kids Iowa, will replace the summer EBT program.
Healthy Kids Iowa aims to provide healthier foods at a lower cost to children across the state.
“Our goal has always been to ensure all Iowa children have access to nutritious, balanced and wholesome food, while promoting healthy eating habits,” said Reynolds.
“I’m grateful to the USDA and Secretary Rollins for partnering with the State of Iowa and placing their trust in our statewide network of meal providers. Together we’re building on the strong foundation already in place to better meet the unique needs of Iowa’s children and families.”
The state’s new program will provide low-income families with $40 worth of fresh and nutrient-dense food per child each month.
Families may choose the items, catering to their own preferences, cultural needs, and dietary restrictions.
The Healthy Kids Iowa program is available to children who receive free or reduced lunches during the school year.
The program will run during the summer months of June, July, and August 2025.
