Community Forum: Fed cuts and growing needs stretch local food banks

With impending Federal and State budget cuts looming over many of this country’s  health and research, recreation, education, arts and other human services agencies, the question of impact on local agencies   –  specifically those that help feed our community members and families in need  –  will be discussed at this month’s Community Forum on Friday, May 9.

Phil Alonso, Executive Director of the Interfaith Food Ministry and Julie Thornbury, Executive Director with The Food Bank of Nevada County, will be this month’s guest speakers. This free, one hour event will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 in the auditorium, room N-12 on the Sierra College Nevada County campus. Local journalist, Lorraine Jewett, will serve as moderator of this month’s event.

“With increasing food costs and possible budget cuts on the horizon, local communities want to know how this will impact our families that depend on these two important service agencies,” said Jewett.

For over 30 years, Interfaith Food Ministry has provided supplemental food and groceries to families in Western Nevada County, with the goal of “getting food to people that need a little extra help,” according to IFM’s Executive Director Phil Alonso. IFM’s website lists many of  the local farms and grocery stores that continue to have a close partnership in helping to provide food. Since 1986, The Food Bank of Nevada County has been providing and distributing food to individuals and families in need.

Sponsored by the Sierra College Foundation’s Nevada County campus, the Community Forum hosts an hour-long, in-depth speaker series several times a year, discussing local issues and topics of interest to both our community and neighboring counties. The Community Forum series will be taking its summer break and will resume in August. Each of these speakers series is free and open to the public.
