ZANESVILLE, Ohio–Many parents are experiencing what experts are now calling the summer scaries.
As the school year winds down, concerns rise over how the change in routine may affect children’s mental health. Without school, kids often face longer screen time, disrupted sleep schedules, and a lack of structure, all of which can take a toll.
“We talked to parents, and we asked them what is it that you’re worried about when it comes to your child’s mental health, and they told us their top worry is screen time that kids are going to be spending more time on screens. Their 2nd worry is that kids are going to be bored. You know parents tend to hear that ‘I’m bored, I’m bored’ and then finally that lack of structure, routine and less sleep during the summer,” Pediatric Psychologist Dr. Ariana Hoet said.
Experts say these concerns are valid and signs of mental strain may show up early, especially in young children adjusting to the sudden freedom of summer.
“One of the first things we see with kids when summer starts are that they do lose all structure all rules and routines because school is out and so we think that it actually impacts their mental health, especially their behavior young kids,” Hoet said.
Experts say kids will be acting out, will be throwing tantrums and will be moodier while older kids may be more irritable. Keeping structure because helps everyone feel in control and calm and know what to expect, so kids need structure even during summer months.
