TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – The 10th annual Safe Kids Day turned the Topeka Zoo into a one stop shop for child safety.
“Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death of Kansas kids, but the great news is that most of these injuries are predictable, which means they’re also preventable, so we’re here to share those tips with parents,” said Cherie Sage, State Director for Safe Kids Kansas.
Families engaged with over two dozen organizations providing educational and entertaining resources for Safe Kids Day, a day to learn how to stay safe and healthy throughout the year.
“All of these people are out here to share information with families and have a really fun day,” Sage continued.
The event also marks the start of Safe Kids Month, an observance every May that helps raise awareness on childhood injury prevention.
“Bumps and scrapes and bruises, those are fine. those are really healthy signs of kids that are exploring the world, but what we’re trying to do is prevent the more serious and disabling injuries,” Sage continued.
As a part of the initiative, kids were given free, customizable bike helmets so they can stay safe in style.
“I got a pink one with butterflies and pink lines all over it,” said Naomi Putnam, event attendee.
But beyond these helmets and handouts, it’s about what safety feels like from a child’s perspective.
“It means to be safe to me so i’m protected and I won’t get hurt or injured,” said an event attendee.
“To stay healthy,” said an event attendee.
Safe Kids Kansas also recieved a $30,000 grant from State Farm in support of the initiative.
