HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Students at Marshall University teamed up with the Facing Hunger Food Bank for their 22nd annual Empty Bowls fundraiser.
Beginner art students make 20 bowls and advanced students make 40.
Proceeds from the event go to the food bank.
The Facing Hunger Foodbank provides food to about 130,000 people a year.
Organizers said this is a way for students to sell their art and benefit the community while doing so.
Art student Sophie Leffew said it’s a great feeling to see people cherishing her artwork.
“It’s so rewarding seeing someone like pick up your bowl and seeing your name,” Leffew said. “Sometimes they even like seek you out, if they like your style. I just love seeing my art out there in the real world literally making a difference and not in my studio.”
Along with selling bowls, students visit the food bank and learn about the services it offers to the area.
“It really can show you that your art can make a difference,” Leffew said. “This just gets everyone talking about this, and people look forward to this every year. So, I totally recommend this fundraiser. It’s a great cause.”
Each bowl sold will help the food bank provide 180 meals to those in need.
