HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Former University of Hawaii athletics director Craig Angelos has reapplied for the position, he confirmed to Hawaii News Now on Friday.
The news was first reported by Kanoa Leahey on his ESPN Honolulu radio show.
Angelos confirmed to Hawaii News Now that he sent in his application on Thursday, but declined further comment to keep a low-key approach.
Angelos was the head of the UH athletics department for 18 months before he was dismissed on Nov. 19 by then-university president David Lassner.
Lassner said the decision was “based on performance” and, while he would not go into specifics, called the move “necessary, appropriate and professional.”
The move stunned some fans and student-athletes, with UH volleyball middle blocker Kurt Nusterer starting a petition to reinstate Angelos.
“Save Craig” shirts also populated the stands and numerous UH sporting events.
Despite those efforts, Angelos’ last day on the job was Dec. 1, 2024.
Associate athletics director Lois Manin is serving as interim AD, but said she is not interested in assuming the position permanently.
New UH president Wendy Hensel officially opened the national search for a new athletics director on April 4. She has said she hopes to have someone in place by early summer.
