I Review Food For A Living & Crumbl’s May Dessert Of The Month Is The Best Thing On The Menu

I have a confession to make: I don’t love Crumbl. As the Utah-based chain has exploded in popularity over the past few years, it has become one of the trendiest dessert destinations. But in most cases, I’ve found the treats too sweet, too heavy, and just too much. That being said, their newest dessert of the month has proved me wrong.

My previous experience with Crumbl has mostly been limited to cookies, but their Dessert of the Month for May 2025 takes a different form. In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, Crumbl is reviving their fan-favorite tres leches cake. It’ll be available nationwide across the country and in Canada and Puerto Rico throughout the month.

But there’s a twist: aside from the standard size, the tres leches cake is also available in a large shareable size ideal for parties and group gatherings. I had the chance to try the tres leches cake ahead of the launch so I could share my unfiltered thoughts with you.

Crumbl describes the dessert as a vanilla cake “soaked in a classic tres leches sauce, topped with whipped cream, and sprinkled with cinnamon.” Based on the description and its appearance, this tres leches cake doesn’t stray too far from other recipes we know and love.

The hallmark of a good tres leches cake is a solid amount of milk pooled at the bottom. And Crumbl’s version passes the vibe check: it’s fully saturated with milk with just the right amount of liquid left over. The liquid itself is pretty much what you’d expect, but Assistant Editor of Audience Development Izabela Campos, who also tried it, noted that the condensed milk flavor could be more pronounced. And since it’s the superior leche of the three, I’m inclined to agree.

My biggest concern, like with any other Crumbl dessert, was the sugar. But, to my surprise and delight, this tres leches cake has just the right amount of sweetness. We have the whipped cream topping to thank. It’s far more enjoyable than the powdered sugar-packed buttercream you can find throughout Crumbl’s menu. It’s creamy, delicately sweet, and flavored with a touch of vanilla.

It’s rare that I encounter a Crumbl dessert that I could see myself finishing. Not only can I easily finish one of these cakes in one sitting, I would also gladly eat it again and again. If you want to try it for yourself, snag a cake at your nearest Crumbl location by the end of the month.
