Schenectady launches free pet food pantry pop-up events for residents in need

Schenectady Police are teaming up with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS), to launch free Pet Food Pantry Pop-Up events for residents in need, as part of the ‘Pets Are Family Too Assistance Program’ and was developed by Lieutenant Michael Dalton and Animal Control Officer Elizabeth Booke of the Schenectady Police Department.

The program is funded by a $20,000 grant awarded to the city in 2023 through the Better Cities for Pets™ program. Schenectady has been recognized as a Better City for Pets, underscoring its commitment to pet-friendly practices across businesses, parks, homes, and shelters.

The Police Department’s Animal Control Unit will host pop-up pet food distribution events at various locations and times throughout the city. These events are free and open to all Schenectady residents in need.

The first event will take place on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, from 12 PM to 2 PM at Central Park Dog Park, located at 500 Iroquois Way.

MHHS will provide free pet food and staff support for the event. Future event dates and locations will be announced later.

This is about keeping families together — and for many, pets are family,” said Mayor Gary McCarthy. “We’re proud to launch a program that reflects that belief and helps our residents through tough times.
