New Kids’ and YA Books: Week of May 5, 2025

Here we round up new and forthcoming children’s titles, including a picture book biography about a Filipina spy in WWII, a picture book about adapting, a picture book following a cranky crow with a secret life, and more.

At Last She Stood: How Joey Guerrero Spied, Survived, and Fought for Freedom by Erin Entrada Kelly. Greenwillow, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-0632-1890-1. Newbery Medalist Kelly excavates the life of a little-known Filipina woman who helped the Allied Forces win WWII while living with Hansen’s disease, also known as leprosy.

Catch! by Trish Cooke, illus. by Ken Wilson-Max. Charlesbridge, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-6235-4622-9. A game of catch turns into a daylong attunement practice in this playfully conceptual picture book. The picture book received a starred review from PW.

Cranky, Crabby Crow (Saves the World) by Corey R. Tabor. Greenwillow, $19.99; ISBN 978-0-06-337358-7. The stoic corvid at the center of this picture book rebuffs friendly overtures from his animal peers, but has a secret agenda. The picture book received a starred review from PW.

Creaky Acres by Calista Brill, illus. by Nilah Magruder. Kokila, $24.99 14.99 paper ISBN 978-0-7352-3061-3; ISBN 978-0-7352-3062-0. Star equestrian Nora moves and joins a local barn where she makes new friends and navigates microaggressions as the only Black kid in her new class.

Drawing Is…: Your Guide to Scribbled Adventures by Elizabeth Haidle. Tundra, $19.99; ISBN 978-1-7748-8503-1. Haidle takes an expansive approach to drawing that covers much more than the mechanics of putting pencil to paper. The picture book received a starred review from PW.

El Niño by Pam Muñoz Ryan, illus. by Joe Cepeda. Scholastic Press, $18.99; ISBN 978-1-3380-6855-9. Eighth grader Kai Sosa contends with grief following his older sister’s death in this powerful tale by the Newbery Honoree.

Elvis & Romeo by David Soman and Jacky Davis. Aladdin, $19.99; ISBN 978-1-6659-4806-7. In this series opener from the married pair, the eponymous protagonists make their respective debuts at a city’s dog park.

The Gate, the Girl, and the Dragon by Grace Lin. Little, Brown, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-316-47832-8. Lin combines ancient and contemporary Chinese lore in this visually stunning tale about a girl, a lion cub, and a worm who must retrieve a lost sacred object to reconnect the mortal and spirit worlds. The Gathering Table by Antwan Eady, illus. by London Ladd. Knopf, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-593-48060-1. In an artfully rendered picture book that spans numerous events, a child recounts a Black family’s tradition of standing around a table under a river birch tree that’s draped with Spanish moss. A Hero’s Guide to Summer Vacation by Pablo Cartaya. Kokila, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-4514-7975-4. Grieving 12-year-old Cuban American boy Gonzalo, who loves to paint, is sent to Mendocino, Calif., to spend time with his curmudgeonly grandfather, a famous author. Hide and Seek with Herbie by Ms. Rachel, illus. by Monique Dong. Random House, $12.99; ISBN 979-8-217-02490-2. Educator and YouTube star Ms. Rachel enlists the help of readers to find her friends in the latest installment of the Ms. Rachel series.

His Face Is the Sun by Michelle Jabès Corpora. Sourcebooks Fire, $19.99; ISBN 978-1-4642-2458-4. A prophecy brings together four teens in an Egyptian kingdom destined for upheaval. The YA book received a starred review from PW.

Hurricane by Jason Chin. Holiday House/Porter, $19.99; ISBN 978-0-8234-5849-3. Caldecott Medalist Chin follows a whirling hurricane forming over the Atlantic and heading for North Carolina’s Hattaras Island. The picture book received a starred review from PW.

J vs. K by Kwame Alexander and Jerry Craft, illus. by Jerry Craft. Little, Brown, $16.99 hardcover; ISBN 978-0-316-58268-1; $10.99 paper ISBN 978-0-316-59710-4. Alexander and Craft emphasize the importance of nurturing creative expression and healthy competition in this meta illustrated collaboration. The middle grade book received a starred review from PW.

Kittybunkport by Scott Rothman, illus. by Zachariah OHora. Viking, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-5936-2206-3. Feline pals Chowder and Crackers live in Kittybunkport, where everyone fears a haunted lighthouse, and when it ceases to shine one day, Chowder and Crackers are volunteered to find out what’s wrong.

Little Big Man by Varian Johnson, illus. by Reggie Brown. Orchard, $18.99; ISBN 978-1-338-80743-1. Johnson and Brown encapsulate the tension of being both a young child and an older sibling in this well-intentioned story about family responsibility.

Miss Liberty by Erin Moonyeen Haley. Storytide, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-06-336001-3. Weather-obsessed Savvy Montrose dreams of following in her older sister’s footsteps by winning the Miss Liberty pageant, but must recoup her plans as everything goes wrong. The middle grade book received a starred review from PW.

One Crazy Summer: The Graphic Novel by Rita Williams-Garcia, illus. by Sharee Miller. Quill Tree, $19.99; ISBN 978-0-06-293558-8. Sister Delphine, Vonetta and Fern thought they’d be spending the summer with their mother in Oakland but instead are sent a Black Panther Day camp where they learn about their ancestry and America’s history.

Return to Sender by Vera Brosgol. Roaring Brook, $18.99; ISBN 978-125029218-6. When Oliver and his new friend Colette discover a wish-granting mail slot that adversely affects others, the duo scramble to undo the damage in this debut prose novel from Caldecott Honoree Brosgol. Smash, Crash, Topple, Roll!: The Inventive Rube Goldberg—A Life in Comics, Contraptions, and Six Simple Machines by Catherine Thimmesh, illus. by Shanda McCloskey. Chronicle, $19.99; ISBN 978-1-4521-4422-1. This picture book biography of Rube Goldberg highlights the subject’s visual impishness and his brilliance in overcomplicating the principles of simple machines. Snowglobe 2 by Soyoung Park, trans. by Joungmin Lee Comfort. Delacorte, $20.99; ISBN 978-0-593-80914-3; $14.99 paper; ISBN 978-0-593-80917-4. After discovering that footage of the upperclass in the domed utopia Snowglobe has been tampered with, Chobahm is framed for a murder in the sequel to Snowglobe.

So Many Years: A Juneteenth Story by Anne Wynter, illus. by Jerome Pumphrey. Clarion, $19.99; ISBN 978-0-063-08114-7. Wynter crafts an affecting, question-oriented look at Juneteenth’s past and present. The picture book received a starred review from PW.

Stuck by Kayla Miller. Clarion, $15.99; ISBN 978-0-06-328565-1. Olive struggles to make the most of summer at Camp Acorn Lake with all her friends fighting in the newest addition to A Click Graphic Novel series.

The Survivor Wants to Die at the End by Adam Silvera. Quill Tree, $23.99; ISBN 978-0-06-324085-8. In the latest installment of Silvera’s series They Both Die at the End, Alano saves Paz’s life, but the two boys must now navigate trying to avoid a fateful call.

This Thing of Ours by Frederick Joseph. Candlewick, $18.99; ISBN 978-1-5362-3346-9. When a career-ending injury jeopardizes his college prospects, a teenage athlete rethinks his future. The YA book received a starred review from PW.

Up in Smoke by Nick Brooks. Holt, $19.99; ISBN 978-1-250-35993-3. After his best friend, Jason—whom Coop views as an older brother figure—persuades him to go looting during a protest, Coop finds himself implicated in a murder.

Weird Sad and Silent by Alison McGhee. Rocky Pond, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-593-85967-4. Friendless Daisy finds refuge in a new peer, and as she gains agency, she uncovers secrets about her classmates and learns that having a voice and choosing to use it are very different things.

Wonderfully Wild: Rewilding a School and Community by Jessica Stremer, illus. by Jose Masse. Beach Lane, $19.99; ISBN 978-1-66595-816-5. Stremer inspires with this uplifting, based-on-true-events story of a school community that enacts a “wonderfully wild” plan to resurrect a beloved schoolyard willow—“a gathering place, a run-laps-around place, a dream-under place.”

Where Are You, Brontë? by Tomie dePaola, illus. by Barbara McClintock. Simon & Schuster, $19.99; ISBN 978-1-5344-1851-6. This picture book by late Caldecott and Newbery Honoree dePaola honors grief and the author’s late dog Brontë.
