PITTSFIELD, Maine (WABI) – A springtime tradition returns to Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield this weekend.
Students are hard at work preparing dishes for the community to indulge in.
11 student and faculty groups representing nine different countries and regions of the U.S. will serve up cuisines at MCI’s annual International Food Festival on Sunday, May 4.
This is an opportunity for the students to showcase their culinary delights and teach the local community about their culture.
Attendees will be able to experience foods from Lithuania, Japan, France, China, Mexico, Ashkenazi, Tanzania, Texas, and Maine.
“Being in Maine, we’re pretty used to the food that we’re acclimated to here,” said event organizer Emily Morin. “This is an opportunity for people to try different things. Every year it’s different. Yeah, sometimes we have the same dish from the same country, but it is different kids making it, so it’s always different. It has a different spice. Maybe it is something their mom taught them. It’s never going to be the same thing twice, so it helps to build that uniqueness and the community all coming together to share food, and what better way to get to know someone’s culture than sharing a meal with them?“
The International Food Festival will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside Parks Gymnasium on the MCI campus.
There is a recommended donation of $3 for kids, $5 for adults, or $15 for families.
Donations will support future International Food Festivals.
