Pickles, Cars, and Blooms Highlight Busy Weekend Across Connecticut

CONNECTICUT — Pickles, vintage cars, and flowers — lots and lots of flowers — will seize the spotlight this weekend in Connecticut.

As the story goes, Mark Twain’s “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” put the young author on the literary map, and on his way to a career as America’s greatest humorist. That leaping amphibian went on to become the unofficial mascot of the Mark Twain Library’s Annual Frog Frolic Family Festival in Redding, where the author once lived.

This year, organizers have added a car show to the festivities, which run Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine. Attendees may purchase food from local trucks and tickets for crafts and games on site.

Gear heads in search of a very specific breed of ride in a very exclusive setting may find what they crave Sunday at the Beachfront Jaguar Car Exhibition in Westbrook. The Jaguar Club of Southern New England event will play host to over 40 classic Jags at the posh Water’s Edge Resort & Spa. The exhibition of iconic autos is free and open to the public, weather permitting, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

As this coming weekend is just one week out from Mother’s Day, the May Market at the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington could be huge. The rain or shine event features premium vendors, flowers and unique plants perfect for mom, set within the museum’s 152 acre sprawl of gardens, grounds, and trails. Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Register online here.

If you prefer your flowers in the ground, Meriden is throwing its annual Daffodil Festival all weekend long. Visitors will find 600,000 daffodils on display at Hubbard Park, along with continuous live music on three stages, a “Silver Fork Food Tent” filled with culinary delicacies from the community’s non-profit organizations, arts, crafts, children’s carnival, parade, and even a fireworks display — the first of the season, by our reckoning. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

And while Meriden knows how to do up daffodils right, it’s tough to compete with Bethlehem when it comes to plain ‘ol dill. Look for loads of pickle inspired food, drinks, contests, kids’ activities and products at Sweet Pete’s Pickle Fest on The Hilltop at March Farm this weekend. It $10 per car to park, and free to get in after that. Park on ‘The Hilltop’ or park in our lower lot and take a shuttle up to The Hilltop. May 3 and 4 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., but the shuttle will be running from 11-5 only.

This weekend is as good as any, through Dec. 15, to catch “Barbara Kasten: Structure, Light, Land,” at The Glass House in New Canaan, but catch it you should. It’s about the best synergy of exhibit space and exhibit you are likely to see anywhere, ever, with Kasten’s super-modernist photography and sculpture more than right at home at architect Philip Johnson’s historic house museum. Tickets are available online here.
