Air bags deploy as car crashes, brings down tree along NJ road

The driver of a stolen car crashed into trees near a Cumberland County elementary school Tuesday morning causing the air bags to deploy, leaving a tree trunk on the road and sending three kids to the hospital with serious injuries, New Jersey State Police said.

The mangled black sedan crashed along Sewall Road, just up the street from Hopewell Crest Elementary School around 5:35 a.m. on April 29, 2025, troopers said.

A juvenile was driving the stolen Kia eastbound of Sewall Road when he lost control and crossed over the center line, “continuing off the edge of the roadway and impacting multiple trees,” state police said.

The force of the crash took down a tree trunk and caused the air bags to deploy, as seen from SkyForce10.

All three children — described by police as “juveniles” — were tossed out of the wreckage and “sustained serious injuries,” troopers said.

The exact reason for the driver losing control and where the stolen car came from weren’t revealed by investigators.

No charges were announced as of Tuesday afternoon.
