PINELLAS PARK — Hundreds of men, women and children of all ages flocked to the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter on U.S. 19 in Pinellas Park on April 26 for the Hot Wheels Legends Tour.
The massive car show is hosted by Mattel in several cities annually where one souped-up entry is chosen to be the company’s toy car.
While the event was free to attend and featured dozens of entries, including monster trucks, motorcycles and miniature cars, the lines to get some of the exclusive Hot Wheels merchandise were long and winding.
But thanks to the unseasonably cool temperatures and a sea of colorful sights to keep everyone occupied, no one seemed to mind.
In fact, one attendee perfectly summed up the experience in a social media post following the event.
“Had an absolute blast today at the National Hot Wheels Legends Tour car show at our local Walmart,” Pinellas Park resident Joshua Berntsen wrote on Facebook. “It was so cool seeing the wild Hot Wheels cars up close — like the Deora II and the Twin Mill — plus a ton of other cars brought by private owners who made their rides look just like Hot Wheels classics. The creativity and detail on display were next level.”
Berntsen added, “The whole event felt like stepping into a life-size Hot Wheels playset, with cars that sparked serious nostalgia and excitement for kids and adults alike. Can’t’ wait for the next one.”
According to Mattel’s website, the next stop on the Legends Tour is in Atlanta on May 3, followed by dates in Detroit, Milwaukee and Kansas City. The 11-stop tour ends in El Segundo, California, in October.
