Welcome summer with Safe Kids Day at the Zoo

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Families are invited to a fun day exploring the outdoors, while also getting a few safety reminders.

Safe Kids Day at the Zoo is Saturday, May 3 at the Topeka Zoo. Cherie Sage with Safe Kids Kansas visited Eye on NE Kansas to share the details.

Sage said the timing is perfect, ahead of the summer months when kids are playing outside, riding bicycles, swimming and doing other activities. But each year, one in every four U.S. children needs medical attention for a preventable injury.

Safe Kids Day at the Zoo will present safety reminders in a fun environment for children and grown-ups. This year’s theme is “Explore the Great Outdoors.”

Sage said 25 community partners will be on hand for the event. Families can enjoy games, entertainment and interactive education activities. Free bicycle helmets will be available from 9 a.m. to Noon, or while supplies last. The child receiving the helmet must be present, because volunteers will ensure the helmets have a proper fit for optimal safety.

Safe Kids Day at the Zoo runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 3 at the Topeka Zoo. Regular zoo admission applies.
