Topeka Zoo to host Safe Kids Day to kick off Safe Kids Month in Kansas

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Safe Kids Kansas and the Topeka Zoo are partnering to host Safe Kids Day at the Zoo at the zoo on Saturday, May 3.

According to a press release from Safe Kids Kansas, Safe Kids Day at the Zoo is an annual event that helps teach children and their grown-ups how to be safe and healthy throughout the year, with this year’s theme being “Explore the Great Outdoors.”

Governor Laura Kelley proclaimed May as Safe Kids Month in Kansas, which helps raise awareness on childhood injury prevention and encourages parents to learn practical tips on how to keep their kids safe from preventable injuries.

Safe Kids Day at the Zoo will have a temporary tattoo booth and entertainment and games courtesy of Happy Faces Entertainment, Kansas Ballet Academy, and the Topeka Cello Collective. There will also be interactive education and resources for parents, combined with a day to explore the Zoo.

More than 25 partners will host booths at the zoo, along with free bicycle helmets being available. They will be fitted to your child by trained volunteers from 9 a.m. until noon. To receive a helmet, your child must be present as helmets are available while supplies and sizes last.

A check will be presented from State Farm to Safe Kids Kansas to support bicycle safety and motor vehicle occupant protection.

Safe Kids Day at the Zoo will take place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and regular zoo admission rates apply.
