Local couple helps kids get out to fish

(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) After seeing a child’s fishing equipment was stolen in a break-in, Tim Cordry not only donated spare equipment but also started a local movement.

Tim and his wife, Teresa Cordry, love fishing so much that when the child needed the equipment, Tim donated some of his own.

“(A family) had posted that somebody had broken into their garage or shed and stole her son’s fishing stuff, and just young kid,” Teresa Cordry shared. “That really tugged at my husband’s heartstrings, so he messaged her and said, hey, I’ve got some extra fishing stuff; come by and grab it.”

His goodwill has sparked a Facebook page called “Take that kid fishing” that lunched in 2024. The group has around 275 members now, showing their love of fishing with friends and family members, but most importantly, finding every way possible to get kids out fishing.

For families who might not be able to afford the equipment, the page does what it can to get kids a pole and equipment so they can enjoy the great outdoors.

“Somebody had commented; so there are more tackle boxes and fewer Xboxes. So, like getting them out of the house and out in nature and, you know, just enjoying that time together,” said Teresa Cordry.

She had this to offer as far as words of encouragement that the Cordry’s have for anyone who may be on the cusp of taking their kids fishing.

“Get those kids out, go fishing, enjoy that time together, because make those memories. The memories are the best part of you. I buy a million dollars worth of things, but at the end of the day, it’s just stuff, but you’re going to have those memories forever.”
