EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) -Here in downtown Evansville, an inspiring group of individuals are demonstrating incredible courage and generosity.
“You feel fine until you get right there sitting on the edge of the building and realizing you’re nine stories up and you have to stand up on the edge of the building and lean back,” said Over the edge participant, Alyssa Williams.
They’re participating in “Over the Edge,” an annual fundraiser for an organization dedicated to granting wishes and providing ongoing support for children battling terminal or life-threatening illnesses.
The concept is certainly attention-grabbing: raise at least $1,000, and you earn the chance to rappel down this nine-story building.
But the motivation behind it is deeply personal for many.
“I started going over the edge when one of my students, Alexis Rueshed, got terminally ill with cancer and she became a WISH kid. She got a trip of a lifetime to go to Disney World and she died within a few weeks after being back home and so doing that for those kids to get those last memories or if they beat it to give them those memories with their families,” said Williams.
Elizabeth Chapman has participated in this fundraiser for many years now, she family knows firsthand the impact this organization can have.
“My daughter Cecelia was a WISH kid 6 years ago, so we just want to give back. Granted has given our family so much that we just want to give back to other kids,” said Over the edge participant, Elizabeth Chapman.
Organizer say this event isn’t just about the thrill of the descent; it’s a powerful opportunity for people of all ages to make a tangible difference in the lives of local children facing unimaginable circumstances.
Organizers tell us that so far, the dedicated participants have already raised over $30,000, and donations continue to pour in.
