SALT LAKE CITY — Video games are in the spotlight this week at the University of Utah as a recent event brought in one of the biggest names in the industry.
Wednesday was “Games Launch” at the University of Utah, where all eyes are on the school’s top-ranked video game program.
This is when undergraduate and graduate students show off their skills and finished video game projects.
“This is to show off everyone’s games, from traditional games to more educational and everything in between,” said Dylan Shaffer Murphy, a student in the program and lead producer of Clockwork Sword.
This all took place on the University of Utah’s campus on Wednesday. The games that were shown at the launch took a full year to complete and refine.
Students in the Games Program said the launch is the pinnacle moment in their school career.
It’s been an amazing journey, now we are finally releasing our capstone game and it’s just been fantastic, just (a) culmination of all our lives and our university experiences,” Shaffer Murphy said.
Some big-name entertainment people were there, including the President of Nintendo America, Doug Bowser. Bowser is also a University of Utah alumni.
“For me, this a perfect connection of my alma mater and a program that is nationally ranked and getting to see what these kids are creating,” Bowser said.
He said for all aged wanting to go into the game industry to “keep your curiosity.”
“I always tell people always be curious, always be willing to learn and explore new things,” Bowser said.
