Nonprofit gives beds to Portland kids in need

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a nonprofit that provides free beds, mattresses, and bedding to kids in need around the country.

On Friday, the Portland Chapter hosted a group of volunteers to help build the beds and make a delivery to a family in need.

“In a build like today, we work for four hours and we probably build 20 beds, said Gregg Miller, founder of Portland Shed.

Miller also helps lead the Portland Chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. The Portland Chapter started in 2018, and since then, Miller said they’ve delivered nearly 1,200 beds to families in need.

On May 17, bikers will take the long journey from Sauvie Island to Fort Stevens State Park near Astoria to raise money for the American Lung Association.

Volunteers were hard at work on Friday, getting each piece of wood ready to become part of a twin-size bed. Volunteers said that while it’s a busy day, it’s also very rewarding work.

“Being able to step back and realize how many beds, even just in a day, that we can build for kids that don’t have them, that really puts it in perspective,” said Becca Merkle.

FOX 12 was able to follow a team while they made a delivery to a local family. The two-man team carefully assembled a bunk bed in its new home and even took the time to make the bed. The whole process was an emotional one for Ericka Farlow, who received the bed for her children.

“I am feeling gratitude,” Farlow said. “I am feeling humbled by the opportunity and the blessing, and I’m feeling supported by the community.”

The new bunk bed arrived just in time for Farlow’s daughter’s eighth birthday. Farlow said that everyone in the house finally has their own bed.

“I will be able to let my children sleep in their own spaces…” she said. “It’s giving autonomy to each member of my family.”

Miller said Sleep in Heavenly Peace is accepting volunteers to help build beds, no experience needed. To learn more, click here.
