CANstruction Designs Aid Food Bank of Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The 16th annual CANstruction design event is on full display at the Dimond Mall. Extraordinary structures are built entirely out of canned food by talented architects, engineers, and students to fight hunger through creativity and community impact.

Leo Artola, a donation coordinator with the Food Bank of Alaska, said, “It’s a great way to engage the public in our mission and a great way for our local architects and engineers to kind of display what they can do.”

Six different teams create these installations and are judged across multiple categories, including the best original design, structural integrity, best use of labels, and the most cans.

“This is my third year working as a team captain and this year we’re working on the Dowl Owl, which is our company mascot. And this year’s theme is animals so we couldn’t go wrong with our company mascot,” said Elena Feghali, a Transportation Designer with Dowl Engineering.

Over 16,000 cans were purchased through team fundraising. The public can check out these exhibits and vote for their favorites before being donated to the Food Bank of Alaska.
