Food & Wine magazine has named a mid-Hudson Valley eatery among the top 15 restaurants in the country.
Stissing House, originally built in 1782, started as a tavern with beds for travelers and had the country’s first domed ballroom, according to its website.
Its wood-fired oven and hearth are something out of “every cook’s dream,” chef and proprietor, Clare de Boer, said in February, and its location near local farms has helped her source the Stissing House menu and build relationships with farmers.
“A lot of places in the city do farm to table,” she said, “but this has redefined what that means for me.”
The historic American tavern’s menu changes with the season. During the warmer months, when local produce is abundant, it changes frequently.
On Jan. 22, de Boer was named a semifinalist in the “Best Chef: New York State” category of the 2025 James Beard Foundation Awards. De Boer was one of 20 semifinalists for best chef in New York and one of only four chosen from outside the New York City area.
Stissing House grabbed the number 10 spot in Food & Wine’s list of best restaurants in the United States.
Of the 15 restaurants chosen, three were from New York, including Stissing House. The Musket Room, in the Nolita neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, took third place and Penny, in Manhattan’s East Village, took 12th place.
“It’s taken us a couple of years to build a really excellent team,” de Boer said in February, “and I’m just so proud of the great work they’re doing.”
