Blue Ridge Area Food Bank’s school food drive breaks records with help of two local students

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank’s school food drive has come to a close, but not without breaking a few records first.

The 2025 drive raised the largest amount of donations to date, with more than 17,000 pounds of food. That’s enough for about 16,000 meals.

In its 14th year, the drive has also now raised more than 100,000 meals total.

Much of this is thanks to this year’s student coordinators, Sofia Smith and Lily Stendig, who helped make it all happen.

“It wasn’t a few people making big donations,” said Stendig, a junior and student coordinator at Albemarle High School. “It was a couple people bringing in a couple cans or donating a couple dollars…Whatever impact you can make, it matters.”

The two students say they are eager to stay involved with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and to continue to use the lessons they learned from the experience past graduation.

“Just seeing the excitement on my peers’ faces from just the work that Lily and I have been doing is really, really heartwarming and really cool,” said Smith, a junior and student coordinator at Tandem Friends School.

Food insecurity exists year-round, not just in the month of March. If you would like to learn more about how to get involved with the Food Bank, you can do so here.
