Publishers have been biting their nails about the Grand Theft Auto 6 release date, not yet announced despite a “fall 2025” promise. No one wants to launch anywhere near that atomic bomb, but at this point, with fall just over four months away, some games are just starting to pull the trigger.
One of the biggest is now Ghost of Yotei, the Ghost of Tsushima sequel from Sucker Punch that has just announced an October 2 release date, along with pre-order and deluxe edition info, and a new trailer. It will be PlayStation’s biggest exclusive release of the year.
A trick that some publishers seem to be doing to at least attempt to avoid GTA 6 is to plan their dates around Borderlands 4, another Take-Two published game that everyone believes they will not let be squashed by GTA 6. We’ve seen this with Bungie launching Marathon on the same day as Borderlands, September 23. Now, Yotei would be a week or so away on October 2.
This is all still a risk, however. Take-Two could easily toss Borderlands 4 anywhere they wanted if they wanted to make room for GTA 6. It’s also possible that GTA 6 does in fact get pushed until early 2026, to still make it out within the fiscal year as promised, but outside of the fall window, which means all of this fretting would be for nothing.

As for Ghost of Yotei, expectations are high, and for good reason. Ghost of Tsushima was one of the best games of its year (and my personal GOTY), and everyone expects the sequel, set in a different era, to live up to or even exceed the first game. Of course we also had a high-profile samurai/ninja game just released, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but these are spaced way, way apart. Shadows was on pace to be the second most-played AC game last we checked, and despite being the same year, I don’t think either of these will infringe upon each other in the least.
And GTA 6? Who knows. The popular theory appears to be a November launched, based on pure guesswork, but there are too many unknowns at play here to know for sure, or to rely on Borderlands 4 as some sort of safe harbor. Hopefully we know more soon.
