Trey Smith, SWHRA join for kids summer food program

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Southwest Human Resources Agency is once again launching their summer food program alongside a familiar face.

It is a federally funded program that has been going on since 2006. The goal is simple: feed kids.

Many kids around the country, and especially in West Tennessee, rely on their meals to come from school. This resource is obviously not there over the summer break.

“It’ll begin in May and go through August,” said Mike Smith, Executive Director of Southwest Human Resources Agency. “A free meal for any child one to 18. There’s no income guidelines or anything like that. Just call our office and we can get you signed up.”

For the past two years, two-time Super Bowl winner and Jackson native, Trey Smith, has worked with this program to serve as many people as possible. He paid a visit to Jackson Tuesday morning to share why this means a lot to him.

“With one in four kids going hungry when summertime begins, that is unacceptable,” said Trey Smith. “As a community, we can band together and do something to fix that. For me, I just feel like the youth are who our community is going to be in the future. We have to do everything that we can to impact them in a positive manner.”

Last year, Trey went with SWHRA to all eight counties that they serve to spread the word. This made a big impact on the amount of people that received meals.

“Yeah, his presence really ramped up the numbers and the interest. We got a lot of calls,” Mike Smith said. “We can put the information out and we can advertise, but somebody like Trey Smith comes and promotes it, it is really big for us.”

Trey said that this program means a lot to him and he thinks it is very important for the communities in West Tennessee.

The goal for this summer is to serve 500,000 meals. They serve around 1 million meals per year.
