Major food retailer files for bankruptcy

A North Carolina-based food retailer has filed for Chapter 11 protection.

Atlantic Natural Foods LLC filed for bankruptcy earlier this month, according to The Street.

The filing for bankruptcy protection comes five months after the company terminated a pending merger agreement with Above Foods.

Atlantic Natural Foods, which is based in Nashville, N.C., produces six plant-based retail food brands: Loma Linda, Chik’n, Tuno, neat, Kaffree Roma, and Modern Menu.

The company listed between $10-$50 million in assets and $1-10 million in liabilities in its bankruptcy petition, which was filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

While the merger between Atlantic Natural Foods and Above Foods did not go forward, a statement from the companies said they would maintain collaborative ties, according to The Street.
