POUGHKEEPSIE – A woman and two young children are lucky to be alive after the Academy Street sidewalk they were on exploded just inches behind them. The blast sent large slabs of the sidewalk into the air and launched debris throughout the surrounding area.
The explosion occurred on Saturday around 1:30 in the afternoon on Academy Street between Cannon on Church Streets in Poughkeepsie.
In a video obtained by Mid Hudson News, the woman and young children can be seen walking south on Academy Street, passing over the manhole just moments before it exploded. A loop of the video at half-speed, available here, shows just how close the people were to tragedy.
City of Poughkeepsie firefighters and police responded to the area within three minutes of the reported explosion, and firefighters used meters that detected high levels of explosive gases in the crater below the missing sidewalk.
Police officers were able to locate the woman, who said they had no injuries.
Deputy Poughkeepsie Fire Chief Vinny Parise told Mid-Hudson News that Central Hudson workers were able to isolate the affected leg of the natural gas line, and repairs will begin Monday.
