PARKERSBURG – If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.

Here Thursday night on a perfect evening for the Russ Parsons Invitational at Stadium Field not a single meet record was broken, but Morgantown walked away with two team title plaques and a pair of high-point hardware that left in the hands of Mohigans Josie Johnson and Seth Wisman.

Morgantown entered the meet as the second-ranked boys team and third-ranked girls squad, while the Big Red boys of veteran boss Rod O’Donnell were No. 6 in triple-A.

The red and white, who finished ahead of George Washington (87), Parkersburg South (77.5), Marietta (45), Wheeling Park (43), Eastern (13) and Greenbrier East (9), came up short of the Mohigans, 203-182.5.

“We were both running 100% tonight. That’s what meets are for,” admitted O’Donnell, who received 10 points apiece thanks to wins by Alex Greer in the pole vault (11-6), Walker Jones in the 1600 (4:24.63) and a pair of relay top of the podium efforts via the shuttles team of Jay Bowling, James Lewis, Tyler Edman and Javel Chandler (1:00.11) and the 4×4 unit of AJ Payne, Christian Rutherford, Jackson Wharton and Landen Deuley (3:29.13).

Wisman managed his high-point nod with the help of a discus victory (147-5), a narrow runner-up to Marietta’s Carson Chavez in the 110 hurdles (15.13-15.18) and a third-place showing in the high jump (6-0) behind runner-up Navi Hewitt of Parkersburg South (6-0) and Wheeling Park champ JT Pockl, who cleared 6 feet, 5 inches.

“They could win it,” coach O’Donnell said of Mohigans possibly being state champs. “That was one of our better efforts in a long, long time. The kids ran very hard. We had 25 personal bests tonight and that’s on a team of 45, I think.

“That’s pretty good and they are young. Those freshmen, they are all good. I was very pleased with them and Morgantown is the real deal. With the youth we have the future looks very, very good.”

Johnson left town with her mantle piece buoyed by victories against Wheeling Park’s Caroline L’Ecuyer in the 100 (15.59-16.33) and 300 (46.59-49.98) hurdles.

The Mohigans, who also received double gold from Allison Hawkins (800, 2:24.77; 1600, 5:12.49) and wins by Emma Smith (high jump, 5-2), Harlyn Nelson (pole vault, 10-0) along with the shuttles squad of Charlee Dunlap, Nelson, Johnson and anchor Brynn Lewis (1:09.02), rolled to a 182-125.5 championship effort ahead of the runner-up Big Reds, who finished ahead of George Washington (110), the local Patriots (76), Park (65), Marietta (57.5), the Spartans (37) and the Eagles (31).

Morgan Metz and Mohigan Maraid Johnson put it all on the line in the 3200, but the Big Red was able to finish in first, 11:29.86 to 11:34.47.

The PHS girls also celebrated victories by Peyton Louden in the shot put (31-3.5), and the 4×8 team of Audrey Wagoner, Olivia Carpenter, Kiera McPeek and Katie Rutherford (10:28.55).

Parkersburg South’s Kymani Prince (long jump, 17-5.75), Marietta’s Maya Diki (100, 13.39) and the Patriots’ 4×2 group of Prince, Kylie Tallman, Addison White and Lilly Dye (1:52.96) were the only other area champs for the girls.

Morgantown’s boys were aided in victory thanks to individual first-places from Keion Arnold (200, 22.97 to GW’s Alexander Petersen’s 22.98; 400, 50.06 to Deuley’s 50.07), Joaquin Summers (800, 2:01.20), Finlay Lorimer (3200, 9:33.07), Isaiah Thompson (long jump, 19-11.5) and Joel Moreland (shot put, 49-5.5). MHS also had golds in the 4×1 (AJ Thomas, Owen Williams, Alexander Gilchrist, Isaiah Thompson, 45.66) and the 4×2 (Thompson, Zaiiden Lockett, Corety Mangrum, Arnold, 1:35.82).

George Washington’s 4×8 of Gavin Baldwin, Robbie Brown, Gage Fox and anchor Crawford Goldman turned in a winning time of 8:16.18 in the 4×8.

The GW girls had wins thanks to Lila Foster (200, 28.42), Ava Mitias (400, 1:01.10), Kyra Walker (discus, 102-7) and the 4×4 of Emerson Sadorra, Foster, Haleyi Knapp and Mitias (4:20.19).
