Kids explore hands-on learning at WVNCC STEAM event

Downtown Wheeling buzzed with activity on Thursday as West Virginia Northern Community College (WVNCC) and The Idea Center hosted a STEAM event, offering children the chance to engage in hands-on learning experiences.

The event, organized by WVNCC education students as their final semester project, featured activities such as trivia, hot air balloon building, and potting plants.

The Idea Center, which recently partnered with WVNCC, provides a unique educational approach, allowing students to gain teaching experience in a classroom setting rather than just sitting in one.

“We just want our students to feel the family approach here at Northern,” Education Program Director Maclaine Newhart said.

The Idea Center, an acronym for Individual, Development, Education, Assistance, has been operational for six years.

“We were in Warwood for almost five years and we just partnered with Northern this August, and it’s a great space to use,” Idea Center Director Helen Bradley said.

“I think I’ll definitely incorporate the trivia into my classroom in the future,” WVNCC education student Kelsea Gray said.

Located along 16th Street on the WVNCC campus, The Idea Center tutors students of all ages and grade levels.
