ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) – Legendary Peabody basketball coach Charles Smith hosted his first-ever golf scramble tournament, bringing the community together for a good cause. The tournament was created as a way to give back to Central Louisiana and raise money to help local kids earn scholarships.
Coach Smith, who was recently inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame, said this event and the cause it supports is close to his heart. “It’s my way of supporting the community that raised me and helping the next generation succeed,” he shared.
The event was held at OakWing Golf Club and included a fun day of golf, competition and community spirit. Prizes were awarded to the top three teams, and players also competed in special challenges like Closest to the Pin, Longest Drive, a putting contest and a hole-in-one challenge.
Community members spoke about what Coach Smith means to the area. “I’m big on giving flowers while people can still smell them,” said community member Dwayne Dupar. “Coach Smith has been a role model for young men, teaching them how to grow into strong, respectful individuals. He’s been doing that ever since I met him.”
Coach Smith’s agent, Shane Williams, said the event is just the beginning. “It’s all about building something special. This was the first year, and it’s already been a great show of how much the community supports Coach Smith. From here, it’ll only get bigger and better.”
Golfer Antonio Cruz, who traveled from Houston to take part, said, “Coach Smith is a legend. Being a part of something like this is important. It brings people together—from Louisiana and beyond—to support a great cause and a great man.”
More coverage of the tournament will air Friday, April 18.
