Golden Harvest Food Bank reopens Aiken facility with new renovations

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – Golden Harvest Food Bank is growing its ability to feed the community.

This time with the grand re-opening of its location in Aiken.

Across their service area last year, Golden Harvest served 14 million meals to our community.

And leaders say new renovations to the Aiken facility will allow them to increase the number of meals they serve by 20 percent this year, a number they’ve never hit before in their history.

In South Carolina, Golden Harvest serves Aiken, Edgefield, McCormick, Allendale, Bamberg and Barnwell counties. Chief Operating Officer and VP of Community Impact Jake Griffis says just like Georgia, the need in the Palmetto State isn’t slowing down.

So they’re ramping up with an updated volunteer packing and sorting area, and a new team of ten who will focus directly on South Carolina neighbors.

Griffis feels this will allow the food bank to get the food out faster than they can house it, in hopes of reaching more people in rural areas.

“The neighbors within Aiken, it’s just diverse as to there’s a core, urban core of downtown Aiken. But most of Aiken is in the rural setting. And so our job is to know who those neighbors are and to realize there is an increase and then be able to get it to them,” said Griffs.

Along with food, the Aiken facility offers SNAP application assistance, a backpack program for kids, senior boxes and more.
