STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) – A new food map is making it easier for people to find where they can get local produce and other grocery items in the commonwealth.
Olivia Hathaway, creator of Food Map of the Valley, said the project was inspired by recent tariffs but is not meant to be a political statement.
“I was inspired to do this by the tariffs because people were worried about how that was going to impact their grocery store experience,” Hathaway said.
Hathaway added that this is a good resource to have in any economy and that other people have sent her other farms and farmers markets to add to the map, saying “there was way more food in the region than I even understood.”
Hathaway said you can send in growers and other local food resources for her to add to the map from any location in Virginia through a Google Form, linked here. She said she hopes to get more farmers on the map from beyond the Valley, “the uncharted territories on the map” so far.
One feature of the map is that users can do is keyword searches to find where specific items are in the area.
“If you are out and you are looking for eggs, you can type the keyword for eggs and it will pull up all of the pins … that have eggs in the description,” Hathaway said. “That was the point of me putting detailed descriptions in there.”
Hathaway said she was happy with the positive response the map has received. You can find a link to the food map here.
