COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The Columbus Blue Jackets have unveiled “Skills and Drills,” a new six-week street hockey program aimed at children ages 5 to 10. This initiative offers an accessible and affordable entry point for families interested in hockey without the commitment of ice time or costly equipment.
“It’s an opportunity for kids to develop those skills in a fun, safe and enjoyable environment,” said Tommy Trowell, grassroots hockey manager for the Blue Jackets. “The Blue Jackets are so proud to offer a program like this that brings our community together and helps grow the sport that we all love.”
The program will emphasize fundamental skills such as stick handling, passing, and shooting. Sessions are set to take place at local parks, including Sunny 95 Park in Upper Arlington and John Bishop Park in Whitehall.
Participants will benefit from a comprehensive package that includes a Blue Jackets-branded street hockey stick, ball, gloves, and mesh pinnie. The program also features professional instruction tailored to each child’s age and skill level, focusing on essential hockey skills and gameplay. Additionally, participants will receive tickets to a 2025-26 preseason CBJ game.
“Parents are excited because this is another opportunity for their children to get active and have fun in the summer months,” Trowell said. “We’ve seen families who have never been involved in hockey now excited to be part of it. It’s about learning the sport, building friendships, and having fun.”
The Blue Jackets provide all necessary equipment, and no skating is required, as the program is conducted on blacktop surfaces. Registration and further details are available at bluejackets.com/skills.
