LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville Metro Police officers are now carrying a little extra compassion on patrol.
The Louisville Metro Police Foundation, LMPD and Kosair For Kids launched the “Paws on Patrol” initiative Wednesday. Patrol officers in every division are now armed with the teddy bears dressed in LMPD uniforms.
The teddy bears will be shared with kids facing trauma, loss or other emergencies. The officers will keep the stuffed animals in their cruisers, ready to offer a small source of comfort when it is needed.
“I think it gives kids something to hold on to that’s tangible, that reminds them of what that officer did for them and the connection they had, and so they know they’re safe to go to that officer and to get help,” said Rebecca Grignon Reker, executive director of the Louisville Metro Police Foundation. “And I think that’s very important when children are in challenging situations, sometimes they’re ongoing, and so if they can look at that little police bear and remember that that police officer was there for them, maybe then they can run towards the police officer when they need the help.”
The officers hit the streets Wednesday with more than a thousand teddy bears.
