Target recalls popular baby food product for elevated lead levels

Target has issued a voluntary recall of a Good & Gather baby food product due to an “elevated level of lead.”

The recalled product is “Good & Gather Baby Pea, Zucchini, Kale & Thyme Vegetable Puree Net Wt 4 oz. (113g). 6+ months,” according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

The nationwide recall for 25,600 units of product, which began March 12, is “Class II.”

According to the FDA, that classification is, “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

The agency states the products have “best by” dates of Dec. 9, 2025 and Dec. 7, 2025 for Lots 4167 and 4169. The recalling firm is baby food manufacturer Fruselva USA in Miami, Florida, according to the FDA.

Lead exposure in children can damage the brain and nervous system, disrupt development and cause behavioral problems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “Even low levels of lead in blood have been shown to negatively affect a child’s health,” states the agency.

“Lead exposure in children is often difficult to see,” according to the FDA. “Most children have no obvious immediate symptoms.” A blood test can determine whether children have been exposed.

Target launched Good & Gather, its in-store food line, in 2019 and it’s become the company’s best-selling food brand.

Target did not respond to a request for comment from TODAY.com. The company told USA Today that consumers should return the product to a Target store for a refund or contact Target Guest Relations (1-800-440-0680).
