U.S. autism rates in children hit record high
Autism rates in U.S. children have been rising steadily since 2000, and in 2022, they hit a record level, according to new CDC data released yesterday. Here’s what to know.
The data: It was collected from 16 monitoring sites in 14 states and Puerto Rico and found that in 2022, 1 in 31 children had autism by age 8, up from 1 in 54 in 2016 and 1 in 150 in 2000. Better awareness and diagnostic tools may partially explain the rise. [NBC News]
Variability: Researchers said the results don’t precisely reflect the U.S. population because screening is different between states. In one Texas county, 1 in 103 kids were diagnosed compared to 1 in 19 near San Diego, which is closer to the “actual” autism rate, they said. [Reuters]
Response: Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said, “The autism epidemic is running rampant,” dismissed better awareness and diagnostic tools being behind the rise, and called autism “preventable,” sparking pushback from the Autism Society of America. [USA Today]

3 QUESTIONS…
about prepping for Easter
The countdown to Easter is on. (It’s Sunday, if it crept up on you.) Britt Ross, pro baker and food shopper, is here to help you plan.

Jessica: Where can I order all the supplies for Easter activities?
Britt: I rounded up everything you need here: For an Easter egg hunt, you’ll need assorted candy and multicolored eggs. Here’s the food coloring you’ll need to dye eggs. And if you want to avoid higher egg prices, I might recommend an Easter coloring book instead — don’t forget markers!
Jessica: What’s good for Easter baskets this year?
Britt: Aside from candy, I love the idea of including colorful vegetable seed packets to encourage outdoor time, Play-Doh eggs (satisfyingly squishy and on-theme) and pastel gel pens (spring-y and practical). My basket of choice is this classic wicker, which comes in four colors.
Jessica: You’re also a baker. Any special recipes you’re whipping up this year?
Britt: For Easter, I usually end up making a carrot cake. But my most popular treat is a homemade version of Reese’s peanut butter eggs. They don’t require baking, and you can decorate them with sprinkles. I always stash some in the freezer for when a craving strikes.
Need more recipes? Here are 30 other desserts that are perfect for Easter.
