It was a trip to the Premier League’s bottom club Southampton last time out for Aston Villa.
Though they had to work fairly hard for the victory, they secured a 3-0 win on the south coast despite missing two penalties.
After Marco Asensio saw a penalty well saved by Aaron Ramsdale, Ollie Watkins scored late in the second half, Donyell Malen doubled the lead six minutes later, and John McGinn wrapped the game up on the rebound after Asensio’s penalty was saved again.
Some players were rested and rotated ahead of today’s game. Three points (eventually) and a clean sheet is decent enough momentum to carry into today’s game.
