Saturday’s prep highlights: Unity girls win Carterville Invite

In baseball

Chillicothe IVC 4, Monticello 0. For one of the few times in recent years, the Sages (10-3) couldn’t get into a groove offensively, adding up just three hits. Ike Young was solid over six innings on the mound, only allowing two runs and four hits while striking out 10.

LeRoy 4, Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond 1. Andrew Fleming pitched five shutout innings with seven strikeouts out of the bullpen to lead the Panthers (5-2) to a win. They only recorded four hits, but Braeden Fox drove in three runs with his one knock to make the most of it. Calahan Binion and Maxton Boddy combined for a solid pitching performance for the Knights (5-6), allowing zero earned runs.

Mahomet-Seymour 4/5, Effingham 7/2. The Bulldogs’ (7-4) two games with Effingham ended with one win and one loss. Game one’s loss took extra innings, as Cam Heinold and Mason Orton each notched two hits. Gavin Bailey led the charge in the second game with two hits, and Max Young pitched five innings to earn the win.

Rantoul 13, Tuscola 11. Down by four runs in the last inning, the Eagles (4-5) rallied to score six and steal a win over the Warriors (4-10). Yovanny Solorzano led Rantoul’s offense with two hits and two RBI. Connor Musgrave had three hits and three RBI for Tuscola.

St. Joseph-Ogden earns two wins. The Spartans (12-2) started the day with an 8-1 win over Tremont on the back of Parker Fitch‘s 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball and 10 strikeouts on the mound. Logan Rosenthal, Nolan Earley, Will Haley and Kodey McKinney each had two hits. Game two ended 6-1 over Williamsville thanks to Earley’s five innings of one-run ball and seven strikeouts. Rosenthal notched three hits, and Bryson Houchens and Asher Pruemer added two hit apiece.

Unity nabs two close wins. A 7-6 win over Notre Dame Private got the Rockets (9-5) going. Brayden Henry, Ryan Cunningham and Brady Parr each had two hits, and Nolan Remole turned in four innings of one-hit ball with zero earned runs. Game two ended in an 11-6 victory over Carterville. Brayden Henry went 3 for 3 at the plate and got the win on the mound, Emmerson Bailey had two hits and four RBI and Tyler Henry added two hits.

Urbana 22/18, Peoria 0/5. The Tigers (5-7) had their way with their Big 12 Conference rival in a doubleheader sweep. Urbana scored 10 runs in both the first and third innings of game one to set the tone. Isaac Armstrong notched two hits and three RBI while Dylan Pettit added three more RBI to lead the offense in the first game.

In softball

Champaign Central 21, Peoria 0. Another day, another win for the Maroons (8-0). Haley Helm and Maisie Bowers combined for a four-inning no-hitter. Bowers also had a good day at the plate with three hits and three RBI. Kaitlyn Helm went 4 for 4 with a pair of triples and three RBI. Molly Kloeppel and Kennedy Hedrick added three hits apiece and combined for six RBI, with Kloeppel blasting a home run.

Fisher picks up two wins. Brooklynn Kellems led the Bunnies (5-3-1) to a 10-4 win over St. Teresa with three hits and two RBI to get the day started. Naomi Dickey added two hits, and Addison Schulze had one hits and three walks. Game two saw Argenta-Oreana (4-7) lead 1-0 heading into the last inning. Then, Peyton Murphy tied the game with an RBI single, and Kellems scored the winning run on a bunt by Peyton Schoonover. Schulze pitched a complete-game beauty to keep the Bunnies in it. Elyssa Armstrong did the same for the Bombers and also had two of their three hits at the plate.

Iroquois West 9, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 6. The Raiders (3-6) scored eight runs in the first two innings to take control. Kyla Dewitt led the offense with three hits, and Leah Honeycutt and Cameron Bork had two hits apiece. Avery Hyatt drove in two runs for the Falcons (7-5), and Jillian Rosendahl pitched 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball in relief.

LeRoy 12/14, Sullivan 2/3. Everything was working for the Panthers (14-1) in their doubleheader sweep of the Redskins (8-6). Jacey Hageman tossed a complete game to improve to 8-0 in the circle to get the day started, and Khloe Builta ran her record to 4-1 after the second game. Emily Mennenga, Laila Carr, Molly Scheuer, Hageman and Annie Conn all had two hits in game one. Carr’s three hits paced the effort in game two, and Mennenga and Hageman added another two hits each. Aeralyn Thrasher drove in both of Sullivan’s runs in the first game, and J’Nai Webb had two hits in the second.

Monticello 6, Chillicothe IVC 5. The Sages (12-2) held off a late-inning comeback effort to eke out a win. Isa Beery and Ali Weidner each homered and accounted for all six of the team’s RBI. Cassidee Stoffel was great once again in the circle, throwing five innings of one-run ball.

Schlarman/Oakwood 10, Paxton-Buckley-Loda 1. Big win for the Comets (5-6-1) over the Panthers (3-9) on the backs of a few impressive performances. Caydence Vermilion was solid in the pitching circle, tossing a complete game and striking out 13 batters. Irene Rangel went 3 for 3 at the plate, and Gracie Hanner had two hits and four RBI.

South Newton 6, Milford/Cissna Park 4. The Bearcats (7-3) fell just short despite getting two hits and two runs apiece from Kami Muehling and Jossalin Lavicka and another two hits and three RBI from Lillie Harris.

Unity continues to show promise. Fresh off a walk-off win over Pontiac, the Rockets (11-2) took a 10-7 win over Carbondale and a 5-3 loss to Carterville. Game one saw Jenna Adkins collect three hits and two RBI and Maegan Rothe record two hits and three RBI. In the second game, Lindy Bates only allowed two earned runs in the circle, but the offense could only muster five hits.

In girls’ soccer

At Urbana. The Tigers hosted the 13th-annual Urbana Invitational, which featured four area teams in the eight-team field. Mahomet-Seymour (4-3-1) had the best showing of area programs, finishing runner-up to Peoria Richwoods in a 2-0 championship game after besting Urbana 7-0 and Mattoon 1-0. Centennial (6-4-1) finished fourth after a 4-0 loss to Richwoods, a 5-1 win over Uni High and a 2-1 loss to Bradley-Bourbonnais. The Tigers (2-3) beat the Illineks (0-10) 1-0 in the seventh-place game after both teams lost their first two games. Area All-Tournament Team honorees included M-S’s Paislee Welge and Erika Johnson, Centennial’s Payton Kaiser, Urbana’s Savannah Finley and Uni High’s Ellie Rosch.

In boys’ track and field

At Carterville. Unity came just 11 placement points away from winning the Carterville Invitational but instead settled for third place. Individual event winners for the Rockets included Garrett Richardson in the 200-meter dash (22.88 seconds) and Brock Schlittler in the 400 (50.54). They also won the 400 relay with Richardson, Adam Reedy, Ryan Rink and Schlittler (43.14); the 1,600 relay with Carter Mette, Mason O’Neill, Alex Mowrer and Schlittler (3:30.60); and the 3,200 relay with Ryan Akers, Caleb Coy, Collin Graven and Camden Fairbanks (8:27.10).

At Rantoul. Prairie Central won the Rantoul Outdoor Invitational with a team score of 160, followed by Clinton in third with 107, Monticello in fourth with 98, Rantoul in fifth with 52, Urbana in ninth with 21 and Schlarman in 10th with nine. Winners for the Hawks included Kolton Wright in the 100-meter dash in 11.36 seconds and the 400 in 51.55, Caiden Schulz in the 200 (22.71), Tagen Fehr in the 110 hurdles (15.39) and 300 hurdles (40.36), Wyatt Ault in the long jump (20 feet, 9 1/2 inches), the 400 relay of Schulz, Wright, Fehr and Ault (43.06) and the 1,600 relay of Wright, Fehr, Griffin Tredennick and John Traub (3:35.80). Victorious for the Maroons were Abel Koritz in the 3,200 (10:15.97) and Jack Webb in the high jump (6-0). Earning wins for the Sages were River Derby in the 1,600 (4:34.53), Will Trimble in the shot put (44-11) and discus (137-7 1/4) and the 3,200 relay of Ayden LeGrande, Tim Sikorski, Caleb Wood and Derby (8:25.40). The host Eagles got a win from the 800 relay team of Romiel Mcgee, Noah Tull, Emarion White and Chase Knock (1:34.41). Arlin Orr nabbed the Tigers’ lone event win in the 800 (2:01.45).

In girls’ track and field

At Carterville. If you thought Unity’s run of success was coming to an end, you’d be wrong. The Rockets won the Carterville Invitational with a team score of 167.5, clear of second place by 62.5. Leading the way were event winners Ashlyn Denney in the 800 (2 minutes, 16.96 seconds), Emily Decker in the 1,600 (5:08.89) and 3,200 (10:58.85), Grace Wherley in the 300 hurdles (48.54), Lauren Shaw in the shot put (33-1) and discus (102-8) and Kendal Zerrusen in the pole vault (10-6). Unity also won all four relays with combinations of Emma Swisher, Grace Tempel, Wherley, Cameron Kaiser, Kylee Reinhart, Payten Niles, Camryn Reedy, Denney, Mackenzie Pound and Josie Cler.

At Metamora. Champaign Central competed at the Chuck Danner Invitational and came away in a tie for sixth place as a team. The Maroons didn’t record any event wins, but they did get runner-up finishes from Julia Bilsbury in the 400-meter dash (59.97 seconds), Aliyah Landis in the 100 hurdles (16.33) and 300 hurdles (49.61) and Audrey Allender in the pole vault (10-8 3/4).
