Food pantry feeds the hungry in Putnam County

CARMEL – Even in affluent Putnam County, people are hurting financially. Just ask organizers of the St. John’s Church Food Pantry which provides food to some 450 individuals each and every week.

Volunteers, mostly senior citizens, pack paper bags with a variety of non-perishable food while others, arriving before dawn, receive and prepare deliveries of perishable food, milk, bread and produce.

The pantry’s volunteer roster numbers 51, under the direction of Edward Welch, who expressed great pride that the program was fully operated by volunteers – some of whom assist with unloading a large truck containing the pantry’s monthly delivery from the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York’s large Town of Montgomery distribution center.

Volunteers from Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York traveled to Mahopac Friday and participated in the weekly food distribution program.

Church Pastor Father Szymon Kurpios expressed thanks and gratitude to the volunteers for their efforts. “It was such a joy to see their support.”

The pastor also announced next Friday a group of Hispanic parishioners will walk the Stations of the Cross through the streets of Mahopac.

Father Szymon also reported that Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan, Archdiocese of New York, will visit the church next Saturday at 11 a.m. for a special blessing of food.
