Casas for CASA raising money to help foster kids through the court system

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Community members and organizations are teaming up to build playhouses for this year’s Casas for CASA fundraiser.

This event raises money for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) to train and support volunteers to serve as advocates for abused and neglected foster children.

Lauren White, the Marketing and Events Director for CASA, says their work is directly tied to community support.

“We cannot do what we do and advocate for the children we advocate for without our community stepping up,” White said. “Saying you know what, I have the time, I have the heart, I have the capacity, I want to become a volunteer, and I want to help change a child’s life.”

One of the organizations helping build a playhouse for the fundraiser this year is High Point Village, a local non-profit developed to provide community for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Deborah Finlayson, High Point’s Director of Development, says the residents are excited to join in on the fun.

“They were like so excited,” Finlayson said. “They were able to have some participation in what kind of style we wanted to have, what kind of colors we wanted to use and that sort of thing, everyone here was excited to bring this project to fruition.”

Finlayson believes anyone can make a difference in the community, no matter their intellectual or developmental ability.

“They do know that every minute that they spend volunteering helping other families helps the community as a whole,” Finlayson said. “Not are they only doping this for CASA which is such a vital organization in our community, they also spend time volunteering for meals on wheels and Ronald McDonald house and Impact Lubbock, they really like volunteering in the community.”

Stacy Kelley, the Senior Development Director for CASA, says this fundraiser impacts not just the winners of the playhouses, but everyone involved.

This small contribution turns into generational changes in these children’s lives,” Kelley said. “That’s why Lauren and I do what we do, that’s why community members step up to volunteer, that’s why people like High Point Village decide to build a house out of nowhere, so we are super blessed.”
