Canisteo-Greenwood Art Club, Scouts look for big turnout at Empty Bowls food drive

Young people in Canisteo are teaming up to feed the hungry and support the less fortunate.

The Canisteo-Greenwood Central School District’s Art Club is partnering with Canisteo Cub Scouts Pack 83 and The Brick House on Main for an Empty Bowls food and supplies drive on Friday, April 11.

Recognized worldwide for the contributions to local food related charities, Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement by artists and crafts people to raise money and food to feed the hungry in their communities.

The Brick House on Main owner Hannah Davis graciously offered the 15 Main St. venue for the event, organizers said.

The event is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. at The Brick House. Each attendee is asked to bring non-perishable food items such as canned goods. Donations of personal hygiene items will also be greatly welcomed.

All the donations will be turned over to the Canisteo Community Food Bank, 18 Greenwood St., to help feed and care for the less fortunate.

Everyone who makes a donation will have the opportunity select one empty bowl to take home.

Also at the event, the clubs will demonstrate paper mâché bowl making. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate with club members as the bowls are being made.

Approximately 20 Art Club members and about 15 Cub Scouts are pitching in for the project.

The Art Club and Cub Scouts hope to make this an annual event, according to club advisor Kurt Mullen.

“I think doing so would help show our whole community that the Art Club is truly committed to giving back, and I think organizing these events year to year would show that commitment,” Mullen said.

Empty Bowls is the second of three community-centered projects the Art Club is involved with. The club held a “Breakfast with Santa” fundraising event in December at the American Legion, and they are painting a mural on the back of the message board sign in Canisteo’s park area.
