Coborn’s to acquire Kessler’s Food and Grocery

Coborn’s Inc. will add a pair of Kessler’s Food and Grocery stores in South Dakota to its network of stores, the grocer announced last week.

The acquisition is expected to close later this month. However, the company has not released details of the deal. The Kessler’s locations, the only two owned by the retailer, are in Aberdeen and Miller.

The two stores will continue to operate under the Kessler’s Food and Grocery banner, and Coborn’s said it intends to hire all approximately 250 workers currently employed at the stores.

The Kessler family sold the stores to Coborn’s because they wanted to keep them competitive, and Coborn’s resources as a larger chain will help achieve that.

“The Kessler family has run their family of stores with great care and is a highly respected retailer,” Chris Coborn, president and CEO of Coborn’s, said in a release. “We look forward to having the entire Kessler’s team join us and learning more about their operations and communities.”

Kessler’s owner Reed Kessler said on Facebook that the decision to sell was one of the toughest he has had to make, but it is the best decision for the workers.

“The retail landscape is changing rapidly, and as a small organization, it would be increasingly difficult for Kessler’s to remain competitive long term,” said Kessler.

Coborn’s is employee-owned and currently operates 77 stores across Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois under the Coborn’s, Cash Wise Foods, and Marketplace Foods brands. It employs about 10,000 workers.
